Gearing Up for the 2012 Project CLEANS Work Season (Video Update) Print this Article Back To Top

It's been five years since SRC started working on Project CLEANS (Cleanup of Abandoned Northern Sites). A lot has been accomplished — structures and buildings on the Gunnar Mine site were safely demolished, a dust suppressant was applied to tailings at Lorado and several hazards at the satellite sites were cleaned up. But much work remains at these abandoned mine sites in northern Saskatchewan. Watch the video to learn about our progress and future plans.

SRC has reached a significant milestone in the cleanup of the Gunnar Mine site in northern Saskatchewan. Eighty buildings and structures posing health and safety risks were safely taken down between 2010-2011. More work remains at the site, including environmental monitoring and testing.

The Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) is hosting community meetings to discuss Project CLEANS (Cleanup of Abandoned Northern Sites):

Update: Lorado Environmental Impact Statement Print this Article Back To Top

The Lorado Environmental Impact Statement was submitted to the provincial Environmental Assessment Branch and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission staff on December 23, 2011. This document describes the plan for remediating the Lorado uranium mill site and the impacts of the project on the environment. These two agencies will coordinate a review by federal and provincial authorities. A response from the regulators is expected within two months.

Close-out Report for Gunnar Mine Site Demolition Work (Action 11) Complete Print this Article Back To Top

SRC has completed the demolition of buildings and structures at the Gunnar Mine site that failed structural safety assessments. The Close-out Report for CNSC Order 10-1 includes pictures and summaries detailing the demolition process.

Abatement and demolition work was carried out at Gunnar during the 2010 and 2011 work seasons. This site will continue to be monitored. If you have any questions about the Gunnar Mine site, please contact Tamara Yankovich at cleans@src.sk.ca or 306-933-5400.
