Cleanup Options for the Gunnar Mine Site

In the Gunnar Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), three cleanup options for the Gunnar Mine site have been identified, with input from northern communities. These three options are discussed in the presentation below.

Gunnar Mine Site Closure Options – November 2010

The Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) is distributing the following flyer to each household and business in the Athabasca Basin region. We are seeking your feedback on our planned activities for the cleanup of the abandoned Gunnar Mine site, as a part of Project CLEANS. Please read through the flyer for more information.

Included with this flyer is a Feedback Form where you can provide input on each the Gunnar cleanup options. Please read through the section on Cleanup Options for the Gunnar Mine Site below and choose the option you prefer on the Feedback Form (only one form per person, please). There is also space to provide your feedback on the cleanup options. Once filled in, you can mail, email or fax the Feedback Form to SRC.

All feedback will be reviewed by SRC and provided as input to the government regulatory decision-makers.

SRC and AECOM Gunnar Mine Options Workshops - Presentation Materials

SRC Presentation at Uranium City Public Meeting - April 2010

The Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) visited Uranium City on April 29, 2010 to host a public meeting. Representatives from SRC provided an update for local residents about the 2009 work season and the proposed satellite sites for the 2010 work season. The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment also attended and answered questions.

SRC Gunnar Mine Rehabilitation Options Workshop - March 16-17, 2010

The Saskatchewan Research Council held a workshop in Stony Rapids on March 16 – 17, 2010 regarding the Gunnar Mine Rehabilitation Project. The purpose of the workshop was to work with meeting participants to explore potential rehabilitation options, and to obtain feedback on work completed to date.

SRC Presentation to CNSC - December 10, 2009

The Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) made a presentation to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) on Thurs. December 10, 2009 in Ottawa, ON. The CNSC hearing was held to consider the application by SRC for an extension on the exemptions of the Gunnar and Lorado mine sites from the requirements of the Nuclear Safety and Control Act.

The Environmental Assessment Gap Analysis and Appendices for the Gunnar Mine Site Rehabilitation Project are now available as PDF documents. Please note that the documentation contained in Appendix A were DRAFT versions of the Project Specific Guidelines and Comprehensive Study Scoping Document. Final versions of these are now available and are contained within the Environmental Assessment Track Report.

EA Track Report, Project-Specific Guidelines and Comprehensive Study Scoping Documents

The Environmental Assessment Track Report for the Former Gunnar Mine Site Rehabilitation Project is now available as a PDF document. This publication was prepared by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and Natural Resources Canada in December 2008. 

The Project-Specific Guidelines and Comprehensive Study Scoping Document are located in Appendix 1 of the PDF. It was prepared by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Natural Resources Canada and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency to assist the Saskatchewan Research Council with the environmental impact assessment of the proposed Former Gunnar Mine Site Rehabilitation Project.

RFP Sessions

The Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) visited Stony Rapids and Uranium City on December 10, 2008 to hold information sessions for potential contractors (sessions in Fond du Lac and Wollaston were planned but cancelled due to weather). Representatives from SRC provided a brief project update, discussed the Request For Proposal process (RFP) and answered questions about the 2009 work season.

Rehabilitation of the former Gunnar Mine Site

The Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC), on behalf of the Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan, is proposing to rehabilitate the former Gunnar mine site, located on the north shore of Lake Athabasca in northern Saskatchewan.

The proposed project involves the: demolition of existing buildings, facilities and structures; appropriate disposal of materials resulting from demolition; installation of an appropriate cover on all or a portion of the exposed mill tailings; rehabilitation of existing waste rock piles; rehabilitation of additional risk(s), as warranted; general site clean-up and re-vegetation, as required; and appropriate monitoring during and after rehabilitation.
