Nesbitt Labine Eagle Site

Location

Nesbitt Labine Eagle mine site is located along Eagle Lake’s south shore 2.5 kilometres northwest of the Eldorado town site.

General description

Nesbitt Labine Uranium Mines Limited began exploring claims at the Eagle Lake site in 1950. Diamond drilling began in 1951 and a 195-metre deep vertical shaft was constructed between 1952 and 1954.

Ore was stockpiled during this period and in 1954 an adit was constructed to load the ore for shipment to the Eldorado Mill over the next two years.

By 1955 the mine was largely depleted and work ceased. Ore shipments continued until the stockpiles had been removed. From 1958 to 1959 the property was leased for mining and 235 tonnes of ore were shipped out.

The site can be accessed by travelling three kilometres along a narrow trail that begins at the Uranium City Airport road.

An abandoned mine shaft remains capped by cement and covered by waste rock. Three mine openings capped with concrete are also visible. An ore loading adit filled with waste rock and an ore storage area can also be found at the site.

There is a large amount of waste rock located at the Eagle mine site. One of the larger rock piles is estimated to be in excess of 2400 m3.  Waste rock was used extensively for site contouring, building foundations and road construction when the mine was operating.

At least eight buildings or building foundations still remain on site, including a large two-storey concrete storage building.
