Uranium Ridges Mines mine
Location
The former Uranium Ridges mine site is located approximately 1.25 kilometres south of Hanson Bay on Beaverlodge Lake. It is approximately one kilometre west of the Lorado Mine and approximately 200 metres north of the main road leading to the Lorado mine.
General description
The site is accessed by a narrow trail off the spur of provincial Highway 962 between Bushell Bay road and Lodge Bay on the north shores of Lake Athabasca. The access trail is free of vegetation and is approximately 200 metres long, ending within an open area directly in front of the former adit.
Initial interest in uranium potential at the property began in 1950. Diamond drilling, geological mapping and radiometric surveys were completed by several companies and eventually an adit was developed to access the ore body. Uranium ore extraction occurred sporadically from 1955 until 1979.
The adit was originally closed in 1989 by taking waste rock from the front of the adit and piling it in the opening.
Recent inspection of the site indicates that the material used to close the adit is slumping. Remediation work to stabilize the adit closure is required to ensure public safety.
