Location:
The mine is located approximately 2.5 km north west of Uranium City on the shores of Jean Lake.
General Description:
The area was originally covered by Azor Mines Ltd, but is now owned by Cayzor Athabasca Mines Ltd. (now New Cayzor Athabasca Mines Ltd.). After acquiring 16 claims from Azor, Cayzor Athabasca investigated the ground underneath Jean Lake and the results lead to the sinking of a shaft in 1954.
Ore shipments to the Lorado Mill began in May 1957 at 150 tons per day and in September of that year reserves were reported to be 208,000 tons of ore at an average grade of 0.33% U3O8. Production soon dropped off and the mine was closed in 1960.
The workings of the mine consist of a shaft and a ventilation raise. The stability of the raise closure is good, but the stability of the shaft closure is questionable and therefore, unpredictable.
The remains of the headframe consist of a pile of rubble composed primarily of rotting lumber and steel debris.
Waste rock covers a large area of the mine site. It makes up all the roads in the area and covers approximately 15-20 hectares.
In addition to the mine site, there is also a dump located approximately 1km further north along the trail leading to the Consolidated Beta Gamma mine site. This dump contains mining debris from the Cayzor site.
The site does require a major cleanup effort as the amount of debris and litter in the area is significant.
