Beta Gamma Mine site

Location:

The Consolidated Beta Gamma mine site is located approximately 4.8 km northwest of Uranium City at the north eastern tip of Bellegrade Lake.

General Description:

The ground was originally staked in 1948 and in 1952, Beta Gamma Mines Ltd. (renamed Consolidated Beta Gamma Mines Ltd. in 1956) acquired the claims to the site.

Prospecting on Betta Gamma’s claims revealed 8 radioactive zones. More drilling followed in the early 1950s and a shaft was sunk.

Insufficient ore reserves resulted in closure of the operation in July 1955.

The main shaft is open with various debris pushed inside, including the headframe and ore bucket; this was an unsuccessful attempt to seal the opening. The opening is accessed easily, and the nature of the debris in the opening represents a danger. Following the removal of the debris a decision will be made to seal the shaft with either a stainless steel or concrete cap; or backfill the shaft to surface with local waste rock.

The adit is in poor condition and no closure appears to have taken place. The workings are accessible to humans and to wildlife. Proposed remediation includes sealing the opening with waste rock taken from the large amount of waste rock on site.

There is a limited amount of debris in the area. There is one 300 gallon tank located near the shaft along with some miscellaneous steel and wooden debris, rail tracks, and 2 ore buckets.
