Environment & Safety

Safety and Environment

  • SRC's overriding priority is safety.
  • Safety is a key component of this project. The existing mine and mill sites have hazards related to structures, contaminants, and low-levels of radiation. SRC will monitor and address all these aspects.
  • Since April 2007, SRC has been conducting assessment work on a contract basis. This work has enabled SRC to have a good understanding of the project requirements.
  • As the dedicated project manager, SRC is responsible for planning and carrying out the site cleanup, including, obtaining approvals and licenses, and participating in the environmental impact assessment.
  • SRC will have discussions with northern communities to enable meaningful participation in determining the best options for reclamation. These discussions include consultation with a variety of Aboriginal communities and organizations.
  • Additional information about SRC’s safety principles and policies is available here.
  • The Project CLEANS Health and Safety Handbook (52 pages) is available for download as a PDF document (download Adobe Reader).

Regulatory Experience

  • The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment regulates the use of Crown land and the protection of the environment. The Environmental Assessment Branch leads provincial departments in the environmental assessment of projects such as the remediation of Gunnar and Lorado. SRC is working with provincial departments to understand their expectations of the projects.
  • The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) regulates aspects of the project to ensure protection of both people and the environment.
  • SRC has experience working with federal regulators. SRC currently holds a CNSC licence for the SLOWPOKE—a reactor used for analysis of uranium samples.
